BACHELOR OF MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE (BMLS)

PROGRAMME PHILOSOPHY

The Department of Medical Laboratory Science is a pivotal department in basic biomedical science training. It aims to train students with a broad and balanced foundation of medical laboratory knowledge and practical skills. The graduates must, as a matter of purpose, be able to perform

(i) accurate and effective clinical diagnostic services,

(ii) ethical and quality assurance of their operating procedures; and

(iii) have considerable proficiency in problem-solving research skills For the advancement of this all-important profession.

By providing sound academic and professional background, graduates will be able to function independently, but preferably in collaboration with other health-care delivery practitioners in the care and management of patients at all levels of health care service delivery both within Nigeria and also in the nternational arena. Graduates of this programme will also be expected to position self for further rainings and general practice of laboratory sciences through continuing education programmes.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the programme are to:

(a) to provide students with strong scientific knowledge base, that will enable them perform and interpret the clinical applications of such knowledge, and continual demonstration of critical reasoning skills;

(b) develop students with the ability to apply their medical laboratory knowledge and skills to the solution of theoretical and practical problems in laboratory medicine;

(c) produce graduates with transferable skills of value in medical and non-medical employment; and

(d) equip students with an enthusiastic sense of the profession; an appreciation of its application in different contexts (in areas such as general medicine, food & beverages and pharmaceutical industries, utility departments e.g. water corporations; research institutions, etc);

Vision

To produce well rounded, competent, creative and innovative professional Medical Laboratory Scientists that will compete very well with their counterparts across the globe.

MISSION

1. To train Medical Laboratory Scientists with sound scientific background to provide good scientific backbone to the practice of medicine and medical research locally and internationally.

2. To produce Medical Laboratory Scientists inculcated with the central position of ethics in biomedicine and medical practice.

3. To produce creative Medical Scientists whose ethos is a lifelong passion for the science that underpins and advances clinical practice and treatment of disease as well as recognizing the concept of team work in science and medicine.
